Easter Regatta 2008

The 2008 Easter Regatta was sailed in conjunction with the Windsurfer One Design Australian Championships resulting in a total of 76 boats and windsurfers on the water. Competitors experienced the full range of Gippsland lakes weather conditions over the three days of racing. Saturday's popular Round Raymond Island race was sailed in 20-25knot winds and 1.2m waves which proved very demanding with only 16 of the 43 starters completing the course. Congratulations to GLYC's Neil Joiner in a Mosquito (with spinnaker) who was first across the line in a record time of 54 minutes. 12yo Tess Lloyd from Parkdale YC sailing a Minnow, also put in an impressive performance to finish second in Division 3. In contrast the Classic 30nm long distance event on Sunday started in a very light breeze, and progess was frustratingly slow until the wind increased during the afternoon to get those that persevered home. The extra pressure also gave the off-the-beach boats the opportunity to enjoy two hotly contested back-to-back afternoon races. The Lake Victoria races scheduled for Monday morning were eventually abandoned due to lack of wind.

Lady Skippers Race 2007

A hotly contested race took place in varied conditions at GLYC on Saturday 24 March. The race was cancelled because it was cold and raining. But thirty minutes later it looked a little brighter, and the competitors decided to go ahead. Muttering from the race officials, donning of coats, and the Access dinghies were launched. (No comments will be made about whether it is a female perogative to change her mind.)

The Female Skippers Race had six starters. Each competitor sailed in four races, all in a different boat. Conditions for the first race were light and variable. The first four starters got off to a pretty slow start, with Old Salty (alias Angela Bacon) showing her wily sailing skills. Angela had a resounding win showing that she has lost none of her racing prowess. Although she did show the temperament of a true champion when she was heard to say "well I can’t say I’m mad about the colour" when she was directed to sail in the brown boat! Dave looked pretty pleased. Perhaps there will be some competition for the helm of Spirit of Somers in the future. Glen was anxious about how to cope with Michelle who came in well behind the rest of the fleet. "You don’t have to live with her", he said ruefully, "she gets really angry when she loses".

Some serious coaching went on with the support crews, and each of the competitors improved greatly with each race. Michelle went on to be just beaten by Breanna in the next race. Sally James showed her experience with many years of Access dinghy sailing on Hazelwood, and performed consistently well. Ruth and Denise both improved with each race, but it was Breanna who was the eventual winner, with a much improved Michelle a close second.

There was no need for bribing the Handicapper, the boats were all the same and it was sailing skill which won the day. Maybe the lighter weights in the light conditions helped? Maybe youth? Who cares, it was lots of fun. All very polite - "excuse me, Starboard! Sorry about that". It served Angela right when she lost the wind by not giving way until the very last minute and got the giggles. The gods looked after the gals. The final race was just completed when all hell broke loose, with driving rain and a nasty squall just as the boats were returning to the shed. Don’t think it was intentional that the Judy G’s bilge pump discharged all over Sally in her dinghy while clinging on to the stern! Well done everyone, and the Fun Factor was certainly there, in spite of the drenching rain!

Thanks to Denise Lamble for story and pictures.
